Movie Review: New Moon

WARNING: Slightly long post

First of all, let me get this out of the way... New Moon is full of semi-undressed well built guys. And just because I'm getting married, does not mean I cannot appreciate the beauty of well toned males... Okay, that done, I'll go on to the movie...

New Moon the movie.... this is my impression. It stays true to the book. Some action sequence that can wake your man up; even if it's just for a while; nice fight scenes, witty (and sometimes lame) dialogues that is truly from the book, and a tad draggy. The last part is actually unavoidable because the book itself is such, and it has to portray the flow otherwise the story will loose its intended effect. The sizzling scenes between Bella and Edward is a little too grown up for my prude side; not for the eyes of teenagers.

So overall, I would say it was a good movie after all. I actually walked in expecting much worse; based on the reviews that I've read on the net.

Now, this movie is in my opinion, fully intended for the readers of Twilight saga. If you've read the second book, you would understand better why the movie was directed the way it was. The second book is about lost love, confusion when it comes to matters of the heart. And one should remember the story is told from Bella's point of view, as such description are based on a teenage girl's perception.

I could relate to Bella's 18-year-old heart when Edward left her. I could understand when Stephanie Meyer talked about the "hole" which seemed only to disappear when someone else was giving the attention. At that age, you love someone with such absolution, no boundaries. So when one actually lost the pillar, something which is the center of one's universe, it is like getting your heart ripped out. One can only love like this once, maybe, and never again. This is when you are so sure of everything, full of youthful hopes and dreams. So when Bella actually laid on the forest floor and curled (and hope to die?), I understood.

After three months the Cullens left, Bella found comfort in Jacob. And so begins a just-because relationship for Bella but a growing fondness on Jacob's side. A man writing a review for New Moon should see Bella's situation with Jacob's feelings when he was rejected. Since he's a wolf, he can run around wildly, he doesn't need to go to fetal position. And remember, Jacob is only a 16-year old boy; a guy at this age, he still does not know what he really wants. Ha ha ha...

Vittoria, the vampire from the first chapter came back to sniff around Bella. But the story does not end there and we will see her again too. In this second installment too, The Volturi is introduced. We will see more of them soon enough. Remember, these characters are not the main subjects for the second book. And they are in as a reminder for the former and introduction for the latter. I think the director did a good job of reminding and introducing the characters.

The second chapter also lacks the interaction with the Cullens and Bella's school friends. Again, they are not intended to be in the main story, and the reason why Alice Cullen is more prominent from the rest is because she is Bella's best friend.

Now, would I suggest for you to watch the movie? Well... my advise will be the same like when I wrote about Twilight. But I will say, New Moon is a better movie than Twilight was. A little draggy but it's just because it needs to be.

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen

There were futuristic robots and there was Megan Foxx.

Was that one-liner enough of a review for you? Just kidding. :-p

At the risk of being a sour grape and probably a spoil sport, let me list down the things I don't fancy about this sequel:

• I hate the cheeky dialogues by Autobots
• I dislike the fact that Optimus Prime has become arrogant and stuck-up
• I dislike the sexual aspects that is being injected into the movie
• Megan Foxx's character has become too sens(x)ual for a robot movie
• I found the movie just a little draggy for my liking
• The female Autobots are not REAL useful robots, except that they are three beautiful sexy motorbikes with three beautiful sexy holographic women riding them
  

The makers should realise that fans of Transformers are not limited to the male gender. I grew up with Michael Jackson's songs AND Transformers! I have been a fan ever since the first time I saw the animation. Sure, I don't collect the figurines, but that does not mean I don't know the names of the steel beings!

On a good side, lotsa action and stunt. I wonder how the roads on Earth could withstand the heavy metal hitting them all the time... Hmm... John Turturro is at his best impersonation of a government-agent-turns-butcher. Josh Duhamel is as usual; yummylicious. Shia LeBeouf, well, his too green for me to really appreciate (ha ha ha).

I love the fact that Bumblebee becomes a true fighting robot instead of just a protector to a boy and his family. Owh... by the way, the movie soundtrack; AWESOME!

My only hope that in the next instalment, they will stick to the robots and more robots. Less human and sexual innuendoes. Come on guys, you can sell the movie without Megan Foxx showing her butt. But then again, who am I kidding? Guys. They only have one thing in their minds. Right?

Movie I'm Waiting for...

The World Wide Web or The WWW or The Internet or The Net was bornt approximately 20 years ago; in a place called CERN. What started of as network file sharing exploded not so long after into one of the biggest and most successful invention ever. Well, at least, in my own opinion.

In just 20 years, this electronic miracle has become a part of our daily life. So significant it is that some people, addicted to its potent spell, become depressed when not able to go online. A faulty undersea cable can cause million of dollars in revenue, not to mention crappy digital communication to those who are far away from family and rely heavily on Skype or Yahoo! availability.

Amazing, this Internet thingy. And the fever for it never goes down. It seems like as long as there is energy powering the Net, it will keep on growing. Good things, bad things, really shocking things, etc.

Not too long ago, a brilliant conspiracy author uses CERN as his main entity and it gave birth to Angles and Demons novel. While this is the first novel, it's his second novel that hit the world so fast and became the first motion picture adapted from his novel; The DaVinci Code. Dan Brown is striking gold again and again. I wonder if I will be able to write like him.

Hitting the cinemas very soon is a new movie based on his first novel; Angels & Demons. I have read all his books and although you cannot deny some of the facts are twisted to suit the flow of the storyline, and changed to make things more exciting, I enjoy reading all of them. I'm looking forward to a film adaption of the Digital Fortress, which is so much closer to my milieu. Even so, reading it, with what little knowledge I have in computers, it's just doesn't ring right here and there. Nevertheless, it's a breathless ride, just ignore the factual faux and you're off to enjoy it to the brink.

I'm holding my horses for Angels & Demons, the movie. I hope it will not disappoint as The DaVinci Code had, a little, to me. Tom Hanks is a good choice for the lead character Robert Langdon. Suits him well. I just hope he gives more life to Mr. Langdon.

TWILIGHT. It's a story better off being read rather than watched. The story is so flat on the silver screen. Maybe because they want to stay true to the novel. The movie has some witty dialogues and funny moments though. The visual effect was awesome; the way Edward's skin glittered, the speed, agility. Nice. Brilliant idea to make the book cover come to live in the cafeteria scene. It's a lovey dovey young adults movie. Not a manly man's glass of beer. Ahaks!

I hate the fact that they made Jake Black look so... soft. The long black mane is not working for me. No siree. Even if we should not be comparing the movie to the book, a man who's supposed to be a werewolf, should look more, well... wolfish. Not looking like a bloke from a Ck ad. Come on. Edward's "paleness" was also over the top. I expected more character development between the Cullen family members and Bella but there was very little. Esme Cullen looked very familiar because she's Ava in Grey's Anatomy, but she plays the character very well.

Anyway, I should give credit to the actors for doing a splendid job on facial expression. The dialogues were weak for a movie, because it only suited to the book. Meyer wrote the story from Bella's point of view, it's Bella's story. And given the fact that they only took six weeks to come out with the script, no wonder it's not so grasping. I hope they do better in the sequel.

Although, I have to say that as I read the subsequent books, I got bored too fast. Meyer tried so hard to portray Bella as a i-couldn't-care-less girl; sometimes it gets on my nerve. And the emotional entanglement between Jacob and Bella since the beginning, it's just draining. She tried to convince the readers there's a reason to it in the fourth book.

I'm digressing. My intention is just to talk about the movie, but I just had to talk about the book too since I did not do it months back when I finished reading the books. :-) So, if you don't mind a cheeky teenage movie, you won't mind so much watching Twilight. If you're a Twilight the novel fan, you might get a little flustered, eventhough they try very hard to stay true to the book. If you're a man, the only reason why you would want to go and watch the movie, is because the action sequence they show in the movie trailer; I have to warn you, you'd be disappointed. So.

The Joker Begins

I personally feel that it is a more appropriate title for Batman: The Dark Knight. Joker was the center of this chapter. And Batman, he was like a puppet running around attending to Joker's plan, behaving as expected. He was... sidelined.

This happened either because Heath Ledger was a much better actor than Christian Bale, or the storyline is simply concentrating on introducing the villains. Either way, I enjoyed the movie, although I did feel it got a tad draggy; there were at least three climaxes, people! And the first two turned out to be anti-climaxes until the final showdown. Hah! Brilliant!

I told Capal Perak that maybe Heath Ledger was so troubled or affected by his role as the Joker that made him accidentally ended his life. Anyway, here's to the magnificent Joker impersonation by Heath! Love it! The couldn't be another Joker like what I've seen last night. He set the bar very high for another to follow.

Christian Bale as Batman is a perfect match. He's good looking; even looked much better than before; and carries the character's personality very well. The directors made the right choice when they decided to cast him as the lead. The film that made me first remember him was Equilibrium. The movie was not that great, but he just look so yummy. Not to mention partnering with Taye Diggs. He he he... Two gorgeous sizzling hot men in a movie. Who wouldn't remember, eh?

Morgan Freeman. What else can be said about this man? Give any role to him, he'll just aced it. No questions about that. Love the way he told off the accountant when the latter tried his hands at blackmailing. It's just speaks Morgan in every way; the lines, the facial expression, the smile. Love it!

Not forgetting Aaron Eckhart and Michael Caine. As well as Gary Oldman. All of which great actors as usual. Maggie Gyllenhaal only made the character Rachel to be remembered at her end. Seriously, that's how I feel. Even then, it was not that great.

All in all, I give this new chapter in Batman saga a 4 star. Why 4? The lack of capable woman in the movie. I feel strongly when there is no girl power in a movie. He he he... Call me sexist, I don't care. One thing for sure, all through out the movie, I miss Heath Ledger more and more. It's a terrible loss.

He Has a Protege!!

Yesterday was my movie day with the family. Abah has always been a fan of Indiana Jones. So, on Saturday, I purchased six tickets for the whole family (macam la ramai sangat) to watch Indi's latest adventure at Cineleisure Mutiara Damansara.

When we arrived, there were already long lines at the ticketing counters. It was only 10:30 am (yes, in the morning) at that time. The movie was at 11 am. I bought two family popcorn sets, and we were off to a great adventure.

It was like watching the old Indiana Jones in action when I was small. Exhilarating. During the movie, Mak mentioned to me that Abah could not be disturbed. Little that she knew that her daughter was also glued to the screen. Ha ha ha...

All in all, it was a great movie. And another great family outing. I enjoyed it tremendously.

B, the movie can be watched again and again. I don't mind watching it again with you... hehehe...

Teleport with a Jumper today!

We went to watch the movie Jumper yesterday.

When watcing the trailer few weeks back, I was intrigued. The action and the plot looked interesting. Although I did remarked to my partner that this might be another film like The Covenant; engaging trailer, weak movie.

About 15 minutes into the moview, I was restless. I was getting bored.

Truth is, I've never read the novel this movie was based on. But, being Jade, I am always interested in super natural or sci-fi movies especially if they are weaved with actions and thrills. Although Jumper has the moves that are pre-requisites for any action movies, it lacks the technicality of being a sci-fi genre.

Maybe it's the time limitation or the need to ensure the viewers are kept glued on their seats for the entire show. Or maybe they'll do it in the sequels. BUT to me it's not enough seeing a renegade teleporting from one end of the sofa to the other end because he's just too lazy to get his bum up to pick up the TV remote.

Who are these so-called Jumpers anyway? Where do they inherit (if it's genetic) the ability? And Paladines, how did they come about? Why are they acting God when they say only God should have the ability to be everywhere anytime? Maybe I missed some part of the movie that explained these.

Whatever the questions popping in my mind, the movie is currently showing in the cinema. If you're a sci-fi fan or just like to see Anakin with Sweet Summer from OC in action, go and get the tickets. Tell me what you think of the movie.

Looney Todd

We went to watch Sweeney Todd last night. It was G-O-R-Y! Bloodiful!! Literally. He he he... Full of blood. But it was SUPERBLY BRILLIANT!

Johnny Depp as usual, outdone himself. And for the first time, I hear him singing. Nope, you see no trace of Captain Jack. But pure hatred and evil in Sweeney Todd aka Benjamin Baker, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Tim Burton did excellently. The musical, originally written by Hugh Wheeler, won Tony award. I will not be surprised if it wins an Oscar. And man! When will Mr. Depp get recognised for his excellent works?

Anyway, as an amateur reviewer, I'd obviously suggest you go and watch this musical movie yourself.

The storyline is about a talented barber, Benjamin Baker who wrongfully accused because a certain influential judge is itchy to get his hands (and other parts of himself) on Baker's pretty blonde wife, Lucy. During his disappearance, Baker re-invented himself as Sweeney Todd, and his wife, out of grief, took arsenic. When Baker-turned-Todd came back to London, he teamed up with Mrs Lovette who ran an unsuccessful pie joint. From there, weird and gory things ensued.

The movie ran for almost two hours. And I enjoyed every minute of it. Although I did close my eyes everytime he swings his blade. And what beautiful silver blades he had... Hmm....

Review: 30 Days of Nights

I went to watch 30 Days of Nights last week. I've always love the idea of being a vampire, regardless the blood drinking neccessity. But seriously, I hate the vampires in the movie.

Eversince I knew what vampires are, their mystique and sensuality. The movie did not carry any of those qualities. These vampires were viscious and cruel and evil. They do not hypnotise their victims to go under their spell they just attack and instill fear in them. In fact, I don't think they even have enough time to be frightened. It was horrible.

As far as the story goes, the story line is pretty straight forward. It's derived from the horror comic written by Steve Niles. It's a story of a group of vampires went rampage over a town in Alaska which was not getting sunlight for 30 days. Vampires. UV ray. So, it's basically heaven for the carnivores and hell for the townspeople. It tells you a story how these people survive, or not, the month of blood and terror.

Of course, there could not be a total happy ending in the movie. Being a vampire fan myself, I somehow knew already that someone will have to sacrifice her/himself to save humanity and beat the beasts. Of course it has to be the hero la kan.

The only question that I had was that, why didn't the vampire disintegrate to ashes at then end of the movie when the sun rised? He only went blackened like a pieace of wood that had been burnt. Liar, liar, pants on fire.

If you look for continuing the image of Dracula in Bram Stoker or in fact, Angel the vampire with soul, this is not the movie to watch. The way the vampires attacked the humans in the movie is similar to the way the virus-infected people cum zombie in Resident Evil.

I don't give stars or rate movies like these. I would just say, go and watch if you don't mind watching a predictable ending.

Movie Watch: Transformers

Went to watch Transformers last night.

AWESOME!!

Never did I see people applauding in the cinema after a sci-fi movie. Not even during Star Wars, not The Matrix, nor Spiderman.

But it happened during Transformers.

The director was a man of his words. He said he wanted the robots to be depicted as if they exist on Earth, and that's just what he did.

Can't wait for the sequels...

A Bald Sharifah

There are more ways than one to be bald these days. Other than shaving your locks off.

Yes, I'm opposed to Amani going skin head, even if it's for a part in the movie. I am all for realism in movies, but hey, we're after all, not Hollywoodians, eh?

You see, some things, maybe you can be radical and challenge them. But for the rest, it's better to let it be.

Maybe, just maybe, these people ought to use their pots of money to buy a clue. In the quest of being the best or making the best, we should not forget our roots, eh?

Having said that, I'm still excited waiting for the next movie by Yasmin Ahmad. As you know, I am after all a fan of her movies...

On Saturday...

The plan was actually to go to Akuaria... But, wrong timing, wrong season altogether. We decided to go to the Popular Book Fair. I never had to pay going in to a book fair before, but this time we had to. RM2 per entry per day.

These are the books that managed to follow us home that day. Four of those are mine. Mine! Mine! The top book, that's definitely mine!! If I had heavy pockets this month, I would've bought more and more books! Alas...

Anyway, now, I have started a new routine. The breakfast book, the weekend book, and the anywhere, anytime books.

This was our tea break. As usual, ice cream never failed to make me happy. Coupled with coffee, hish! They definitely made my day!


The feast ended approximately 15 minutes after it was laid on the table. He he he... Yes, we're a couple of sweet tooth kids.

In the evening, I went to watch two movies. Waris Jari Hantu and Next. The former was not scary at all, although a little sad and touching. The ending, was not unexpected. I sorta figured it out much, much earlier. Most probably others had too. I'll give the movie three stars for effort and acting. The latter movie, was interesting, but the ending made me a bit dumbfounded. The storyline was a bit shaky. I do not mind a hanging ending but it was too abrupt. I thought they could do better. And for this one I shall give two stars.

Hey, I'm an amateur movie reviewer. My take on movies do not represent the masses, it's just what I feel. And if anyone else shares the same views, it says something about the movie, right? He he he...

The company's dinner is tonight. I still haven't had the faintest idea how to achieve the hair and makeup that I'm planning. But I know I will by the time I'm ready. Now... if only I could get someone to drive me to the hotel... Hmmm...

Movie Snippets

Since I'm fighting with sleepiness, the following are my take on the movies that I recently watched. In descending order...

Sumolah
Citer ni klako. Tapi sangat la banyak nyer message yang hendak disampaikan. Letih jugak la tengok. Seriously penat sebab digesting the underlying message. Besides that, punyer lah banyak nyer advertisement Celcom ngan Ogawa. Terpaksa lah kot since sponsors, eh? Anyway, nama-nama make-believe sushi restaurants yang diorang guna sungguh la menggeletek buah pinggang sehinggakan semalam bila Jade jalan kat MidValley terus tergelak sebab ada satu restoran sushi ni nama dia "OK Sushi". Seperti dibuat-buat pula... In fact, Afdlin's employer in the moview was named "Boleh Sushi". See the similarity? Hilarity aside, the people involved in the movie really did their research and worked hard to deliver well deserved awards.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3
This third and final (sure or not?) installment has lesser humour. In this episode all questions will be answered as to who and why and how. Although the ending was far from expected, it will still make you laugh because Captain Jack Sparrow lost his ship again. Only this time, he held the trump card, so to speak. I might be spoiling your movie, if you have not watched it, by asking, can a man really wait for that one day on the land to have all the earthly pleasures after 10 years of abstaining? Oooohhh... I love the part where Poppet was in control. Oooooo... She's the Pirate King! Go girl power!! And you know, I was definitely wishing Elizabeth and Jack Sparrow would just be together! That would be a lovely fairytale ending. As for Calypso. I don't like how it ended for her. It seemed too lose. There should be some sort of a closure. Well, that's just me. (just a note, I had loved Johnny Depp since the days of "21 Jump Street"... Yes, I am that old. :-p)

Spiderman 3
Oooooo... Blackie Spidey. Tobey McGuire enthralled the audience (by audience I'm specifically referring to yours truly since I do not how others felt) by being the naughty and adventurous highly seductive Peter Parker. Meeeeoooowww! Somehow he managed to combine PP's bookish look with devilish delights. Although the dance moves were questioned and criticised badly in some media, I personally found it exhilarating. Maybe the fact that Jade don't really dance... (wink! wink!) At least, not that well, eh? Harry, Harry, Harry... From the first movie, I am pulled towards Harry. And he died!! Man!!! As for the lovely (?) MJ, hmmm... what's-her-name was a bit kayu. I don't know... I just couldn't reacted the way I'm supposed to towards the character. And her shrilling screaming, oh my gosh... I know she was supposed to show how scared she was but it. just. did. not. make me feel sorry for her. Ahh.. Kristen Dunst, sorry babe, you were just... mediocre. (did I spell her name correctly?)

Movie: Blood and Chocolate

I think I've made a point to tell you that I love anything magical and supernatural. Last night I met Silver to watch Blood and Chocolate. You can read the synopsis here and review here. I did not know for sure it was based on a book, but suspected it. A search on Google, confirmed it.

Let's talk about the movie, since I have not read the book. I love the cinematography. The part where the transformation takes place, humans changing to wolves, that was awesome. The way it was done made it so realistic that it's easily believable. It was beautiful.

They could do with more variety of wolves though. The ones they showed in the movie looked similar. And wolves are supposed to be beautiful and handsome. The bad guy character is too lame and he died too easily. Silver was disappointed that Gabriel was not as tough as he looked like. The main character, Viviane, was traumatic because of a tragic event when she was small. Her family was killed by hunters in th US so she went back to Romania and to live with her aunt, Astrid. Gabriel and Astrid had a son, Rafe who was a renegade.

As the pack leader, Gabriel is to choose a new mate every 7 years. I thought wolves mate for life? Anyway, there was this scene in a club, whe Astrid tried to seduce him, to which he said, "Every one of us ages, Astrid. We just have to do it gracefully". I hate that. This is a very typical male statement. :-P

Anyway, the story went that Viviane was supposed to mate with Gabriel, and she is said to be the chosen one, who will bring a new age to the werewolf clan. Viviane, a teenager, fell in love for the first time, with a struggling artist/writer, Aidane. Aidane writes a graphic novel about werewolves. They met when he was doing his research.

So, that is as far as I will tell. Go and watch if you are into vampires and werewolves. If you watched Underworld, then you might not want to miss this.

Overall, the story is very straight forward. I might get the book, although apparently it's a teenage reading. That does not matter, because Jade is forever young, eh?

ps: I may have missed it, but I did not hear any wolf howling in the movie. Strange, isn't it, for a werewolf story?

pps: I have bought the second book of the Black Magician Trilogy, The Novice.

Dia tanya, "U tak nak beli tisu?"
Aku pun pandang dia dengan penuh tanda soklan kat muka. Dia pun kata, "orang kata citer ni boleh nangis..."
Aku tergelak sambil kata dengan eksyen nyer, "eleh... tak nangis.. u tengok la nanti kalu tak caya..."


Masa dalam panggung...

"iskk.. alamak... jangan nangis.. jangan nangis.. control Jade.. control..."
Lepas tu... dia genggam erat tangan aku.
"he he he... agaknyer mamat ni pun nangis kot... muahaha..." aku tergelak dalam hati.
Dan air mata aku mengalir...

Bila keluar panggung...
Dia senyum jer kat aku. Tak de pun cakap, "I told you so..."

So, itu semalam. Aku pergi nonton CINTA. Korang pun tau kan, aku sangat sangat jarang tengok filem buatan Malaysia. Bukan sebab sombong atau berlagak atau perasan, cuma aku muak disogok dengan jalan cerita yang tipikal. Cerita-cerita yang aku dah boleh agak apa akhirnya.

Mungkin aku boleh agak apa yang akan berlaku dalam CINTA, tapi kenapa aku masih lagi suka tengok? Mungkin sebab CINTA adalah cerita kau, cerita aku dan cerita mereka. Kau tak nak nangis, tapi kau tak terelak dari tersentuh. Kau tahu ia hanyalah filem, tapi kau masih mengiakan kebenarannya. Dan sebab itulah kau akan mengalirkan air mata.

Ada beberapa adegan di mana dialog pelakon sukar didengari. Sebab pelakon kekadang berbisik. Dan maaf, suara Jacyln Victor menyanyikan lagu Cinta terdengar seperti cengkerik yang begitu memekakkan. Mungkin dia punya taktik untuk mengawal alunan suaranya, tapi sungguh tidak sesuai pada aku untuk dia menyanyikan lagu syahdu seperti Cinta.

CINTA adalah cerita hidup aku, kau dan mereka. Ada suka, ada duka. Ada yang pasti, dan ada kejutan. CINTA buat kau berfikir adakah kau sedang menikmati segalanya yang dianugerah Tuhan padamu. Adakah kau menggunakan masa dengan optimum buat orang-orang yang kau sayang dan orang-orang yang sayangkan kau. CINTA buat kau bertanya samada kau sedang melepaskan sesuatu yang begitu berharga dalam mengejar ketidakpastian yang nyata. Maka CINTA akan membuat kau ketawa, sedih, mungkin mengalirkan air mata dalam diam, berhenti dan berfikir.

Perlu tonton? Kau tak akan mati atau sakit atau kecewa kalau kau tak pergi tengok. Tapi kalau kau mahu sessi apresiasi filem Malaysia, kau pergi la tengok. Kalau cerita ini hanya ditayangkan dekat Gold Class, aku masih pergi tengok. Tapi, kau tak perlu terima apa yang aku cakap, kau tak perlu percaya apa yang aku kata. Kau pergi la tengok.
